Bring a little cheer to the season with this light and refreshing cocktail, inspired by one of my favorite treats, Turkish delight and my beloved summer cocktail, the gin fizz. A little tart, with exotic notes from the rose syrup, this drink is sure to become a festive season favorite.

While this drink looks impressive, it falls into the effortlessly chic category, needing only 5 ingredients and 12 minutes (tops) to pull together. It will go even quicker if you purchase premade rose syrup. If you don’t have a cocktail shaker, you can easily use a large mason jar to mix up the drink. Don’t have limes? All good. Swap out the lime juice for lemon or grapefruit juice, or even some passionfruit pulp.

This drink has the benefit of being vegan friendly, as we get our foamy top from chickpea liquid, also known as aquafaba, which replaces the egg whites usually found in a classic gin fizz. Fun fact you can also make delicious vegan meringues from aquafaba. Aquafaba has a high protein content, making it ideal for creating foams in cocktails, it also has the added benefit of being slightly salty, which enhances the flavor of our drink. Did you know that bartenders often shake drinks with a little salt? Salt is the ultimate flavor enhancer and this is as true in cocktails, as it is in food.

Turkish Twist

Serves 2:

For the cocktail:

90 ml gin

120ml lime juice, freshly squeezed

1/4 Cup Rose Syrup *

60ml aquafaba (chickpea liquid)

Club soda, to top


*Spice Mecca brand rose syrup can be purchased from most South African supermarkets

Rose Syrup:

1/4 Cup Sugar

3 Tbsp  water

Rose colouring (optional)

2 Tbsp Rose water



Add the sugar and water to a pot and heat until the sugar has dissolved. Add the rosewater and colouring (add as needed) and allow the mixture to cool until needed.

To make your cocktail, add your gin, lime, measured rosesyrup and aquafaba to a large jar or cocktail shaker. Fill the mason jar half full with ice, place the lid on and shake for 15 seconds until the cocktail is foamy. Pour the cocktail into a glass and top with soda.

Stir and taste, and add more sweetness if necessary

Serve immediately!

Chefs tip: If you do a shake without ice first, then add the ice and shake again, you will have a more foamy frothy cocktail!
